On Saturday, September 11 from 11 am – 2 pm, The Little Traveler will host a Patricia Locke
Trunk Show.
Inspiring designs featuring stunning colors—blues, greens, teals and more—are what has won us over. This Chicago designer has been creating jewelry for over thirty years, and her pieces are a combination of fine art and modern fashion. We continue to expand this line of earrings, bracelets, necklaces and pins as more and more of our friends request it. Stop by The Little Traveler to pick up your “t-shirt earrings”- perfect for when you’re dressed down but just want a little sparkle on your ear.
Patricia Locke jewelry is immediately recognizable for its distinctive asymmetry, tantalizing multi-metal combinations and elegant use of positive-negative space. Each piece presents an exquisite paradox, at once handsome and beautiful, organic and geometric, and contemporary with an heirloom quality. Patricia, along with Deborah Rethemeyer, designs new collections every year, and all Patricia Locke jewelry is handcrafted by a team of artisans outside of Chicago, Illinois.

Department 56 began as part of Bachman’s, a premiere retail florist in Minneapolis. Bachman’s used a numbering system to identify each of its departments. The number assigned to wholesale gift imports division was, you guessed it, 56! In 1976, the department began to take shape as you know it today with the introduction of six hand-painted, lighted ceramic buildings, the beginnings of the Original Snow Village®.

From the Original Snow Village Series
This Snow Village was all inspired one Christmas evening when a group of friends went out to dinner at a small country inn nestled in a quiet river town. The lights sparkled on the new fallen snow, inspiring the visitors with Christmas memories. To preserve the magic of the moment, the idea for a miniature lighted Christmas village was born.
Now headquartered in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Department 56 is the premier name in giftware and collectibles, including hand-painted porcelain bisque Snowbabies™. But the company is still best know for its charming hand-crafted lighted villages, which have been expanded to include not only The Snow Village Series, but The North Pole Series, The Dickens’ Village Series and many more. Festive fall displays are also possible now with Dept 56 Halloween buildings and accessories.

From the Legends of Sleepy Hallow-een series
Create stunning, memorable displays that reflect your style and imagination. From small town America to the streets of New York to Victorian England, the magical North Pole to spooky Sleepy Hallow, Department 56 villages are thoughtfully created using hand-craftsmanship and the highest level of architectural detail to achieve authenticity. And what better place to put together the village of your dreams than our very own Little Traveler building in the picturesque village of Geneva, Illinois?
Each year, certain Dept 56 products are retired. See which village items retire at the end of 2009.

Trollbeads Trunk Show Friday April 30-Saturday, May 1: Get a 5th bead FREE when you purchase four beads.
Trollbeads, created by eighteen Danish and internationally renowned jewelery designers, are so much more than pretty bracelets or necklaces. They are functional art, finding inspiration from mythology, astrology, fairy tales, fauna, flora, cultural diversity, and even familiar, everyday things. Looking at the Trollbeads collection is more like viewing an art gallery rather than shopping for jewelry. Trollbeads have won international artistic recognition and have recently been exhibited at Sculpture Objects & Functional Art in Chicago and New York.
Because each person’s story is unique, the Trollbeads gallery includes a wide variety of unique and interesting beads, charms and pendants for individuals to create beautiful and meaningful bracelets and necklaces, starting with the highest quality of raw materials, including sterling silver, 18 carat gold, Italian Murano glass, natural pearls and precious stones. Add to that the variety in design, from symbols to flowers to animals to zodiac signs and you’ll understand that truly, each piece of Trollbeads jewelry is as individual as the person wearing it.

Local author David Algrim is known for interactive children’s books where kids have fun with such things as pull tabs and scratch-and-sniff to learn valuable lessons. They are the kind of books that children want to read over and over and are quickly becoming classics with titles like Wake Up Papa Bear, Oops-a-Daisy and his latest, Don’t Touch, It’s Hot. A desire to read these kinds of interactive, fun books with a lesson to his own children is what inspired him to write them. Lucky us!
David has lived his whole life in the Chicago area and has been a resident of Geneva, IL for four years. He loves the small community feel of Geneva and says that living here feels very natural. David is very active in the community and you can meet him at local book readings and signings. He’s a frequent and popular guest in The Little Traveler’s toy room. To keep updated on David’s activities and where he’ll be appearing next, be sure to sign up as a fan at his facebook page.
David’s collection of books along with many other children’s books can be found in our toy department. In addition, you can purchase any of David Algrim’s books at our on-line store.
In Wake Up, Papa Bear, toddlers get their chance to tickle Papa Bear’s toes, poke his nose and pull his ear when he falls asleep in Little Cub’s bed. How can they wake up the sleeping bear?
Oops-a-Daisy is an interactive lift-the-flap board book for toddlers that helps them out in social situations by letting them know it’s okay to have a clumsy day, or in the words of our heroine: “Oops-a-daisy!”
Don’t Touch, It’s Hot is an interactive children’s book filled with interesting textures to touch and scents to scratch-and-sniff. It’s a fun way to teach young children about what’s hot in the kitchen.

Dear Little Traveler,
Greetings from South Florida!
Though I live in a vacation capital, for the last few years I have spent my vacation in Batavia with visits to my brother and sister-in-law. And I just want to share with you how the highlight of those visits has become a day spent in Geneva at The Little Traveler– and I do mean a pretty full day. Our day always takes on the same delightful pattern: we shop our way to the middle of the store, stop to energize at The Atrium Cafe for lunch, continuing shopping our way through the rest of the store.
These enjoyable “day trips” have actually taken on the status of family legend where the mantra, “Don’t buy anythng that won’t fit in the suitcase,” is featured. It seems that with great regularity I not only fill my suitcases with your little treasures but I fall in love with a large treasure that requires a very large box that must be shipped home! A chandelier, a wall decoration, and a statue have all made the trip from The Little Traveler in Illinois to my home in Florida.
Let my family tease me. I’ll be back for more treasures… and I’m glad that you ship!
Thanks for the fun! See you next year.
Fondly,
Trish Kornblatt, Boynton Beach, FL
Trish will receive a $50 gift certificate as a token of our thanks for this lovely letter. Send your letters to Almanack Editor, 404 S. Third St., Geneva, IL 60134.
