Dear Little Traveler,

I wanted to write a note to express my gratitude for always being there when needed. I was in desperate need of Christmas ornaments, at a non-Christmas time of year…

Growing up in our family, we chose an ornament every year from Marshall Field’s and ate under the Christmas tree. As we’ve gotten older, we continue this tradition with our children, and also give each other ornaments. When my youngest sister Wendy got married, I gathered a basketful of ornaments symbolizing things like “hope,” “love,” “security,” “home,” “friendship,” “marriage,” etc.

However, when my other sister Donna got engaged in February and planned a September wedding, there was no holiday season around the corner to help with my gift idea. The opportunities for finding cute and appropriate ornaments were very slim, but I really wanted to recreate another wedding basket or ornaments. Even online, I couldn’t find what I wanted.

With the shower fast approaching, I drove to The Little Traveler in July and found almost every single ornament I needed. Donna told me afterward that she was hoping I was going to do the ornament basket and I did because of your Christmas rooms.

So thank you again, for making one of our family traditions just perfect!

Sincerely,

Karen Baldwin, Oak Park

Dear Little Traveler,

For more than four decades, my “girlfriends” and I have celebrated each of our birthdays with a long trip to The Little Traveler. Some of those dear friends are gone now, so we keep adding new friends and adult daughters. In the last couple of years, my granddaughter would always ask if she could come with us. We’d always say that Little Traveler was for grown ups, but maybe when she was older. We promised…maybe when she was five. So on Sara’s 5th birthday, July 29, 2008, Sara, her mom, and both her grandparents took the train to The Little Traveler for lunch and shopping (the Toy Room was Sara’s favorite). The next day Sara informed her mother, “I’ve been on a train and I’ve been to The Little Traveler. That means I’m grown up, so from now on I can make my own decisions.”

Coming of age fast at The Little Traveler!

Toys for newborns through toddlers – Our buyers have searched the market and found wonderful new toys for little ones ages 0-36 months. Our favorites are from Parent Magazine Toys, Early Learning Center, and WOW, a new line of British designed playthings. Babies will have such fun playing with sturdy, fun and even educational toys including a fax machine, kitchen items and a variety of trucks.

Yoohoos – They’re animals, but not really. These oh-so-cuddly plush toys are big-eyed creatures with long colorful tails that come in various sizes and  feature their own unique – non-traditional – sound effects. They’re so different, they’re quickly becoming a customer favorite!

Little Traveler Ts, plush purses and bears – Our wee friends love this shop as much as the grown-ups do, so let them flaunt it. Kids can colorize their own Little Traveler designer T shirt – which features the outside of the Toy Department – as well as other cool princess, dinosaur, bike and fireman shirts. Little girls can carry their own Little Traveler pet-carrier purse, complete with plush fox (for the Fox Valley of course),  or cuddle up with their very own Little Traveler bear.  After all, why should the grown-ups have all the fun at this special store?

32 ounce wheel of Brie (or you can use two smaller wheels)

1/2 jar 16 ounce Boscoli Italian Olive Salad*

3 T. Columela Extra Virgin Olive Oil*

2 T. Mas Portell Balsamic Vinegar*

1 large red onion, thinly sliced

6 leaves fresh basil, torn into small pieces

1/4 C. chopped fresh parsley

Urban Oven Olive Oil Crackers or Stonewall Kitchen Sea Salt Crackers*

*Available in our International Food Courts.  Boscoli Italian Olive Salad is also available in our online gourmet store

Place Brie on a serving platter and allow to come to room temperature, about one hour.  In a sauté pan,  heat the olive oil and sauté the red onions until they are cooked down and caramelized, stirring occasionally.  This will take approximately 20 – 25 minutes.  Add the Balsamic vinegar and stir to blend.  Remove from the heat and add the Boscoli Italian Olive Salad, basil and parsley.  Spread over the Brie Cheese and serve with crackers.

*Note:  you can also prepare this on Fire and Flavor Cedar planks to lend a smoky flavor.  Just soak the plank for one hour.  Place the Brie on the plank and place in a medium hot grill for 5 minutes.  Top with olive mixture and serve right off of the plank. (If you are preparing the cheese this way, do not allow the cheese to set out at room temperature for one hour.  Place it on the plank directly from the refrigerator.)
