I would just like to say how much I love Little Traveler’s.  I have taken so many of my staff there and we call our outings “our mental health getaways”!  We have been doing this now over 20+ years and I never get tired of coming there.

It is my first place to go for a new baby outfit too.  Everything is different than you see in regular stores.  I am also happy to see so many items in the food areas being made in America.  Thank you.

Recipe for Corn and Black Bean Salad

Recipe for Roasted Garlic & Onion Jam Pizza

From the beginning, Stonewall Kitchen—founded by entrepreneurial friends, Jim Stott and Jonathan King—has been based on ideals born out of Maine: unspoiled beauty, wholesomeness, and a sense of community.  That’s why The Little Traveler is proud to carry Stonewall Kitchen products in our gourmet department.

Jim and Jonathan were waiters, cooks, and avid gardeners when they began making jam and selling it at farmer’s markets.  They’ve always believed that “If you really produce a high quality item, you’ll be successful.”  So they’ve only ever used high-quality, wholesome and tasty ingredients in Stonewall Kitchen recipes, and that strategy certainly has proven successful.

Demand quickly outpaced the production capacity of their small cottage kitchen, so Jim and Jonathan purchased and renovated an old 1700s barn in Kittery, Maine.  That was Stonewall Kitchen’s headquarters for a short couple years before they moved to an even larger space in York and renovated an old community grocery store.  All the while the two entrepreneurs stayed busy mixing and pouring ingredients out back, packing boxes, and answering phones.

In 1995 Jim and Jonathan attended the Fancy Food Show in New York City, the Ocars of the specialty food industry. They felt like fish out of the (Maine) water in the big city, but Stonewall Kitchen managed to bring home an unprecedented award for first time attendees: Outstanding Jam for Roasted Garlic Onion Jam and a second highest honor award for Outstanding Product Line. They left NYC with 500 orders from retailers across the country.

Stonewall Kitchen once again quickly outgrew its location and after gaining much support from the local community, Jim and Jonathan purchased an eight-acre parcel of town-owned land and built a 46,000 square-foot headquarters, manufacturing, and flagship store on Route 1 in York, Maine in 1999.

Phil Ford’s Bone Suckin’ Sauce is available in The Little Traveler’s on-line store.

Recipe for No Bones Party DipRecipe for Fabulous Ribs in the Oven

Phil Ford of Raleigh, North Carolina developed his barbecue sauce in the late 1980s while trying to recreate his mother’s recipe.  His experimenting was a success!  Friends and family loved it and even told him he should bottle and sell it.

While he knew people enjoyed his sauce, he had trouble believing anyone would pay money for it.  Lucky for us,  his persistent sister-in-law—Sandi Ford, owner of Ford’s Fancy Fruits & Gourmet Foods in Raleigh, NC—thought differently.

Sandy and her husband partnered with Phil to get the sauce to market—the deal was that he’d make it and they’d give it a name and sell it.  While trying to think up a name, Sandy thought about how good the sauce was and how it made her do something she’d never done before—suck on the bones to get the last little bit of flavor. A name was born and the sauce was launched in November, 1992

The sauce was initially marketed in North Carolina and then South Carolina, but tourists took the delicious sauce back home with them—all across the USA.  In March 1994, Bone Suckin’ Sauce Won the NC Battle of the Sauces, boosting its fame, and today Phil’s “experiment” is exported to over 40 countries.

Bone Suckin’ Sauce is an all natural, fat-free, fragrant blend includes: tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, honey, molasses, mustard, horseradish, lemon juice, onions, garlic, peppers, natural hickory smoke, natural spices and salt.

The Boscoli Family is a Louisiana based manufacturer of fine Italian gourmet foods. You can find a nice selection of Boscoli Family products on the shelves in The Little Traveler’s gourmet department.

Boscoli Foods, Inc. was established in 1992 in the greater New Orleans, Louisiana area, the heart of world famous New Orleans cuisine.  Their products are created from time-honored, Old World recipes handed down through generations of Italian families.

In the early 1900′s, when the Italian population of New Orleans reached  its peak, an Italian bakery produced a large, round loaf of bread.  This bread was split and thinly layered with popular Italian cold cuts, quality boiled ham, Mortadella, Genoa salami, Provolone cheese and topped with Italian Olive Salad to create an over-stuffed sandwich called the Muffuletta.

Boscoli Family Italian Olive Salad is a medley of pickled cauliflower, carrots and celery, green olives, black olives and capers, combined with a special blend of spices and select 100% olive oil, still hand-made using a 100-year-old family recipe.  Today,  Italian Olive Salad remains a most popular condiment on sandwiches and is used as a topping on Italian salads, in hot or cold pasta salads, potato salads, tuna salad, seafood salads, on pizza, bruscetta and antipasti.

As the Boscoli Family continued to grow, the product line expanded to include extra virgin olive oil, stuffed olives, giardiniera, sun dried tomatoes, a variety of pickled vegetables and capers.

Buon Appetito!

Hadley Pottery is not only decorative and functional, it is extremely durable, and that’s why it’s so popular in The Little Traveler’s gift department. The hand-crafted pottery receives its strength from a one-time firing cycle. Each piece is formed much like it was sixty years ago, using clay native to Kentucky and Indiana.

Decoration and single firing process

The decoration is hand painted directly on the green or unfired clay items. Items are then coated with a porcelain-like white glaze by dipping or spraying. The term ―underglaze‖ is often associated with Hadley Pottery—meaning that the whimsical hand painted design is under the glaze, making the decoration permanent.

The pottery is fired only one time to create a maximum bond between the body, decoration, and glaze. Separate firings, as is the practice with most dinnerware, leaves the decoration vulnerable to abrasion, and thus chipping. But Hadley Pottery’s single firing process—at approximately 2100 degree Fahrenheit—results in a sturdy product, which is chip resistant, dishwasher, oven, and microwave safe.

Unique glazes and “Hadley Blue”

All glazes are compounded and ground on the premises in Louisville, Kentucky. “Hadley Blue” –the company’s signature color, is vibrant due the combination of cobalt and various metal oxides. The high firing temperature and glazing requirements limit the range of colors but in turn create the ability to produce the highly durable Hadley product. All glazes are completely lead-free and cadmium-free.

How it’s made

1. Clay is transported inside the factory, where impurities are naturally removed with water. Clay is compressed and converted into “cakes” which are large thick square slabs.

2. Some Hadley Table Items, including plates are formed with the use of a large press which cuts through the cake to produce flattened curved shapes. Rounded items such as bowls and cups are either jiggered or cast on a potter’s wheel. Other items such as pitchers and figurines require unique molds.

3. Items are then air-dried, at which time they are called “green-ware.”

4. Artists hand paint Mary Alice Hadley designs on each piece before a white glaze is applied.

5. Products are then carefully loaded in the kiln. The heating process takes 24 hours. An additional 24 hours is required for cooling.

The John Medeiros collection of jewelry is one of the most popular collections of necklaces, earring, and bracelets at The Little Traveler.  Like much of our specialty jewelry, it is designed and made in the USA. John Medeiros jewelry is classic yet unique and both elegant and affordable.

As proof of the fine quality of John Medeiros jewelry, it comes with a lifetime guarantee.  Each piece is made from non-precious, lead-free premium alloy with .02% silver and is strong and lightweight.

John Medeiros

John Medeiros, founder and CEO of Tahoe Jewelry, introduced the John Medeiros line in 2000 after having worked in the jewelry industry for many years. As a child of European immigrants in Providence, Rhode Island—once the international capital of costume jewelry production—Medeiros worked after school in the precious metals industry while still in school.

In 1985, Medeiros founded Tahoe Jewelry, where he worked by day to provide the precious metals jewelry industry with intricate polishing and stone setting services.  At night, he worked on what would become the John Medeiros line—real jewelry hand crafted from non-precious metals.

Cynthia Jones has been designing and handcrafting jewelry from her studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico since 2006.  Her goal is to create jewelry that is modern and sophisticated and that can be worn for any occasion.  She wants women who wear her hammered metal jewelry to feel like they’re wearing a unique piece of art created specifically for them.

Cynthia first realized her love of the arts through drawing, and continues to sketch out each piece of jewelry before it is produced.  She received a B.S. in metalsmithing/jewelry from Southern Connecticut State University and completed a two year apprenticeship with a jeweler.
