Baa Baa Zuzu Recycles with Style

A shrunken wool sweater would reduce most of us to tears, but Sue Burns, the “Zuzu” of Baa Baa Zuzu, saw in the wreckage a new cottage industry.

“My husband did the laundry one day and shrunk my sweaters by accident. So, I took the so-called ruined pieces and cut them and sewed them back into little hats and gloves,” says Burns.

She moved from mittens and other accessories to children’s clothing and eventually up to women’s apparel. Based on Burns’ designs, artisans hand-cut and hand-craft each Baa Baa Zuzu piece from discarded wool clothing, like sweaters and men’s suits, into a brand new fashion item that no one would ever guess was made from recycled materials.

Baa Baa Zuzu’s general manager, Lisa Brookfield explains, “We get the wool in; it’s vintage wool. It’s been through the post consumer market, which means it’s through a Goodwill, and we then purchase it, and it goes through a washing process. Everything is stripped of things that are useful for us later in the process. So we take zippers and buttons, anything we can use to embellish later on.”

Not only is the process environmentally-conscious, but it ensures that each piece is truly one-of-a-kind. The Little Traveler’s customers have been thrilled with the bright colors and fun details on the Baa Baa Zuzu wool jackets they’ve found in our store.

Fancy Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients:

1 lb ground pork 1 lb ground beef
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/4 cup Robert Rothschild garlic champagne mustard*
1 Tbsp Dean Jacobs Extra Virgin Olive Oil*
2 cups Stonewall Kitchen Corn Relish*
1 med onion, finely diced
2 cups frozen corn
5 lrg potatoes, peeled and quartered
1 jar Stonewall Kitchen Artichoke Caper Relish*
1/4 lb butter – reserve 2 tablespoons, keep chilled
3/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
1/2 cup milk

Directions:

Boil potatoes in salted water until tender . Heat oil in skillet, add onion and cook until soft. Add beef, pork, salt, pepper and cook until crumbly and no longer pink, drain off fat. Add mustard, mix well and pour into 9 x 13 baking dish. Mix corn relish with corn and layer evenly over meat. Drain potatoes, return to pot, add 6 tablespoons butter and coarsely mash. Add artichoke caper relish and 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, mash well. Add remaining milk slowly until desired consistency. Spread potatoes evenly over corn layer. Top with pats of chilled butter and sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake at 350º for 40 minutes and potatoes are browned.
