Happy Retirement to Babs

December 18, 2019

If you're a Little Traveler regular, you'll recognize this pretty lady from our Gift Galleries. On January 1, 2020, Babs officially set off on her next adventure—retirement.

Babs came to work at The Little Traveler thirteen-and-a-half years ago. But her history with our 36-room boutique goes back much further than that.  As Babs likes to explain, "My first visit to The Little Traveler was in my mother's tummy!" She's literally a lifelong customer. Next year will mark her mother's 70th anniversary of being a Little Traveler shopper.

Babs enjoys watching the awe on faces of Little Traveler newbies visiting for the first time. "They've never seen any place like this before," she explains. "I also love seeing familiar customers whose families have been coming to the store for generations. They're making new memories together, just like my family."

Although retail salesmanship runs in Babs' family, she never thought it was for her. But after helping out at downtown Geneva's The Sea Captain's Lady during its final months in business, she found she had a knack for it. Next stop: The Little Traveler. Do you remember the Antiques Department and Crystal Room? That's where Babs started on July 22, 2006.

"I've seen a lot of changes around here," Babs says, "and they've been wonderful." Two of her favorite changes during her tenure are the redecorating of the Atrium Cafe and the addition of Sunday Brunch.

In retirement, Babs looks forward to having more time to pursue her many interests, including history, art, recycling, and of course, family. She plans to travel more with her husband, whom she describes as "a mad scientist." She also calls him her hero. Though he's retired from Fermilab, he continues working to improve our world by making strides in developing systems for sustainable energy as well as new cancer therapies using acceleration. As a leading expert in his field, he's often asked to speak internationally. But his first port of call with his newly retired wife will be Florida for their annual sojourn in the Sunshine State.

We wish Babs all good things in her retirement and hope to see her at many a Sunday brunch in the future.
