Northern Illinois Food Bank, Illinois’s largest food bank by distribution and the food bank for the suburbs of Chicago, is a non-profit organization that has engaged the community in creating access to nutritious groceries for neighbors in need since 1983. Through its headquarters in Geneva, satellite centers, and its network of more than 900 member food pantries and feeding sites, the Food Bank exists to help provide every meal every day to every neighbor across 13 counties. Our neighbors in need face tough choices, such as choosing between putting food on the table or paying other bills and expenses. The groceries that neighbors receive through the Food Bank’s network can help alleviate those choices and lead to healthier communities in Northern Illinois.
In its Fiscal Year that ended June 30, the Food Bank distributed more than 80 million meals—a 16 percent increase from the prior year, and the equivalent of nearly 220,000 meals daily across its 13-county service area. During its initial COVID-19 response from March-June, the Food Bank distributed 30 million meals to meet the rising need across its service area. As many as 30-50% of neighbors accessing the Food Bank’s distributions during this time had never visited a food pantry or received charitable food before. The Food Bank expects the increased need to continue into the coming year or two as our neighbors recover from the health and economic impacts of the pandemic.
