William Moulis

Do you recognized this mural? It's in The Little Traveler's Shoe Room. In the mid-20th century, Kate Raftery, founder of The Little Traveler, commissioned Art Institute of Chicago student William Moulis to paint these and other murals throughout the store. From 1942-1952, he kept an art studio in the “penthouse” of The Little Traveler and is the creator of the very first Almanacks, which held more of his artwork and poetry.

He went on to establish the design style for notable hotels and restaurants in Chicago, New York, and Hong Kong. Because of his many accomplishments, he was posthumously inducted into the Fox Valley Arts Hall of Fame in 2018. Read more about him at

Sylvia Simon

Watercolor by Sylvia Simon; image, courtesy of the Geneva History Museum

Sylvia Simon was gifted watercolor artist and a founding member of the Wayne Art League. In 1971, she and her husband, Sol, purchased The Little Traveler. Sylvia was instrumental in growing that business. She also painted every day and described her time spent painting as a "lift up." Her watercolors beautifully capture local landscapes, architecture, and everyday life.

Sylvia passed away in 2004 at the age of 91. In 2014, The Geneva History Museum held the Sylvia Simon Art Exhibition & Auction celebrating her life and art. Learn more about Sylvia in this video made for that 2014 exhibit.

The Little Traveler is currently owned and managed by Sylvia's son, Michael Simon.
